Bturner, after the restructuring, do you think the company will be profitable? Unions can negotiate snap back clauses and profit sharing so that what's taken away today may partially be replaced later. I don't hear those provisions being offered voluntarily to RES or Airport agents. If a Tier 1 at 21.54 per hour goes to an HBR at 15.00/hour, that's 240.00 loss of pay per week/480.00 bi-weekly or 960.00 monthly. If a union helped you save just 1/2 of that devestating financial loss by paying 40.00 in dues per month, then you do the Math.

Interesting you would suggest or refer to any fellow employee as stupid. I know pilots and mechanics that are extremly intelligent and innovative. We have flight attendants that I'm confident would maintain their professionalism in a time of crisis. Think about that next time you're at 20K feet and traveling at 550MPH. Yet, if 2/3 of all front line employees choose to be unionized, then what does that say for Res and Airport agents? As Res offices close and airport ticket agents are outsourced and no real voice by agents in the process, does that make us smarter?

Hans, you are mistaken about the union not protecting jobs and outsourcing. US Airways did not bring jobs back because of customer complaints, they brought them back because of contract language. Here it is:

26 The Company may outsource any reservations work as a backfill to
27 vacancies created by acceptance of “Early Outs” (EO) or vacancies
28 created by attrition for a period beginning January 1, 2005 and
29 ending November 1, 2011. This paragraph does not require the
30 Company to add reservations employees, unless necessary to meet
31 the needs of service as determined by the Company.
32 2. Reservations employees who are active or on LOA as of January 6,
33 2005, not electing EO will be afforded “No furlough to the street
34 Protection,” except in force majeure circumstances, until the day
35 prior to the amendable date of this Agreement at which time the “No
36 furlough to the street Protection” will be eliminated, except as
37 provided for in the CBA.

Go to www.cwa.net and click on helpful links if you wish to read the entire contract for yourself.

Unions can't protect any jobs. All jobs can be outsource to another company. They may claim they can help keep jobs but they can't. Look at US Airways reservations, they outsourced those jobs to the Manila. Yet now they are bringing them back only because of passenger complaints not the union.

Together we need to rally at NYC this a a great opportunity, there is going to be lots of media coverage, and we need to stop the company and its intention to manneuver the voting outcome with delay tactics.

The union groups are in a different boat then we are. Our boat has a hole in the bottom and it is sinking fast and theirs has life preservers, something we don’t have yet. The unions will continue to negotiate, even though the company has filed the 1113 process. What happened to the agents last week was not and does not have to be approved by the bankruptcy court. Only changes to the union contracts do.

What the unions have now hasn’t changed since concessionary bargaining while we continued to have things taken away from us since 2003. You hit the nail on the head when you said “contractual.” The unions still have what’s in their contract since the last negotiations. We continued to have things taken away and although a few things were given back to try and convince us we don’t need a union, they were just ripped away again. What the unions have is the same for everyone in their group, unlike the wedge management drove between reservations agents with 3 different pay plans and benefit packages.

Contractual agreements can be made to protect work, and provide for increases in benefits and pay after the bankruptcy process. If you don’t believe it, do what I did, talk to US Airways agents and asked how having a union helped them through bankruptcy. After speaking to them I decided dues were the least of my worries for the security and a voice having a union will give me.

How stupid can you be? All of the union represented work groups are in the same boat we are in. Have you actually seen a difference in what we are being offered and what the current unions are getting for their rank and file. We are all getting screwed and their isn't a darn thing the unions can do about it. The difference is we are not paying to get screwed. The union just wants to collect more dues. Whatever the judge rules on will be contractual for at least the next five years so please tell me what the union can do for you in this time frame other than take your money and laugh all the way to the bank

Well said Chris, the agent workgroup will not be treated fairly without a union to represent our interests. The company do not consider employees as assets and will only comply with what can be enforced by a contract.

This is finally our chance to have a voice in how American Airlines treats the agents work group and stand up to management in how they treat us considering we are the only group not actually represented in a union during this bankruptcy. I just hope we can win this election and save all our jobs we need the CWA especially at this moment in time.
